NPR tiny desk series

Tiny Desk Concerts is one of my favorite ways online to hear new and old artists perform music. They are doing something similar to what Daytrotter is doing, but I think daytrotter makes them use the instruments that are in the studio?

Anyways here are a couple I really like, but honestly I haven’t listened to all of them and really they all are awesome.

New Kavinsky EP

Photobucket

Kavinsky is set to release his new EP Nightcall. The EP was produced by the one and only Guy Manuel of Daft Punk and mixed by SebastiAN

The title track nightcalls is a slower track than you are used to hearing from Kavinsky, but its still got his signature sound. Additional vocals by CSS’s Lovefoxxx.

Here is the other cut on the EP, “Pacific Coast Highway.”

le grand cru

Le grand Cru Clothing is the brainchild of some west coast based artists/musicians with the passion to make some sick threads. I was turned on to it through my friend Mike Young who is a part of their crew.

You can follow their interests and adventures at the LGC BLOG

Our mission as a company is a natural extension of our efforts to speak to a cross-section of humanity because we want to use the energy of the collective to speak about issues of importance both within our communities and in the global community as a whole. Our name means “The Great Growth,” and it is our desire that our product will speak to the progress that is possible when we develop and grow as both artists and activists. - LGC mission statement

LGC officially launched their website earlier this month and I was pleasantly surprised with the turn out. They had some fresh tshirt designs when I first saw them, but turned it up a notch with some of their new designs.

Speech Debelle (Myspace)

Photobucket

UK up and comer Speech Debelle has been making waves with her upbeat and true-to-heart style. Her lyrics, in my opinion, give a personal feel to the songs and allow us as the listener to relate to the everyday issues she is experiencing.

Im trying to hold down the smoke and the drink
And I’m trying to get in the gym amongst other things
When my phone rings I’m scared of answering
Cause the pull of the past is a proper hype ting
It’s so alluring but I’m maturing so when I travel in on the train I by a ticket now
And when I’m ordering a drink I just sip it now
Im in no rush to go nowhere fast cause
Life seems when hell of a task
so I better buckle up and sink the clutch on it fast quick
- Speech Debelle - “Better Days”

Though at times her lyrics get a bit real you find there’s always a thaw to the colder moments

See it all boils down to the have and the have not’s the things that you have or you aint got
Some people are overweight some people aint got no food on the plate
You can act like you don’t know or don’t wanna know what’s past Pluto
But if you heads in the pillow and your butts in the air, they gonna put it right there yo
- Speech Debelle - “Spinnin”

Nicki Minaj (Myspace)

Photobucket

For someone who doesnt even have an album Nicki Minaj has worked with some big names in the scene. She has had guest spots on tracks with Beyonce, J. Holiday, Lloyd, Mya, Juelz Santana, Drake, and Lil Wayne. In 07, she released her first mixtape, Playtime Is Over, in which Lil Wayne appeared on the track “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop”. She appeared in the July 08 issue of XXL magazine, and later that year won Female Artist of the Year at the Underground Music Awards. Most recently Nicki was given a spot on the BET Music awards Cyphers. Nicki has her unique style and rips it up in the vid.

Ke$ha (Myspace)

Your hot Ke$ha!!….Another fresh face on the scene, Ke$ha has already worked with some heavy hitters in the industry. She is the voice behind Flo Rida’s relentlessly obnoxious “Right Round,” as well as the background voice on Britney’s “Lace And Leather.” Her original tracks have been produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Benny Blanco, and Fernando Garibay as well as received remixes and support from some bigger names, including melodic remix master Fred Falke. I don’t love all of her tracks, because she is a bit more pop/trash musique (think Khia, Tila Tequila, and now…Ke$ha.) than some of these chicks, but she is hot and rad none the less. Perfect material for remix and club hits.

KE$HA | MySpace Video

The video reminds me of the childhood days when my parents would be screaming at me and telling me how lazy I was, but as long as I could get out of the house with my backpack and skateboard, everything would be ok. Notice the Dirty Deeds shirts on the two guys near the end of the video! reppin the LALA land.

Gotta love this girl. She has mad attitude and apparently DGAF.

From her myspace:

I’m a bit of a stalker. I love south. and boys. and boots. and boners. and beer. and babes. balloons. barbeque sause. big balls. bonfires. babes. boobs. butts. bonnie rait. blowjobs.

I sometimes wish I was a man…i would have the siickesT trash-stash….”

back from the dead - exlovers

Photobucket

The UK based band exlovers are going to bring this blog back alive. After a brief hiatus I am ready to listen and write…

Skinny young guitar bands are dime-a-dozen but what sets exlovers apart is some serious talent and support from some of UK’s favorites. Their newly released EP proves that the singles released earlier this year were not just a stroke of luck.

Upon first listen I cant seem to shake the similarity to Elliot Smith. Its no coincidence then that the new 5 track “You forget so easily” EP , was recorded with Stephen Street (Elliot Smith, Peter Doherty, Blur). Street approached the group after hearing them support Peter Doherty in early 2009. The title track “You Forget So Easily” is a melodic pop tune with a strong Cure-like bassline. While “New Years Day’ seems inspired by Elliott Smith and his talent for creating melody from the darkest of places. I also really enjoy the delicate boy-girl harmonies which have worked so well for notable bands such as Stars, and The XX.

Photobucket

From the reviews I have read and intial listens of this band it seems as if they are off to a good start. Cant wait to hear a full length album from these guys. I wont be surprised if these guys hit the Summer Festival circuit pretty hard as well.

check out the video for “You Forget So Easily,” the title track of the band’s recent EP.

I also think its kinda funny that this picture taken from their myspace shows them wearing two of my past halloween costumes.

I stumbled upon this London based quintet through their cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game. At first thought you might dread the thought of another overplayed cover, but exlover cut an excellent version of the song during their latest demo session.

The sickness, Happy Hump Day, & The Twelves

So everyone in my life is sick right now which is a bummer. I was fortunate enough to have been sick last week and had gotten over it with a quickness which in return, be immune to it all. I hope this post makes you all feel better! Happy Hump Day.

I can’t get enough of these Brazilian dudes. I stumbled upon them about a year and half ago. They got popular shortly before I came across them by their remix that they did of Boyz by MIA. Soon after that, people and the blog world started noticing them for their remixes. Big names: Asobi Seksu, Erland Oye, Metric, La Roux, New Young Pony Club….started noticing them as well and started paying them to remix their songs. Their remixes are loved and adored because of their unique style. They leave the vocals and most of the original song intact but adds their own beat bumping, disco booty shaking, Daft Punk feel to it. They take tracks that you might not think is danceable, Fleet Foxes- White Winter Hymnal (prime example), and make it to a steady head-bopping, feet shuffler! Their original tracks: Works for Me, I Feel Fine, and When You Talk are songs that preview for what’s to come on their debut album. These guys are definitely on my radar.

These tracks I have collected over the year and half that I have been listening to them. I’m pretty sure these are all of them. Please send some my way if I’m missing any. Download their most recent full hour mix, The Twelfth Hour, from the Halloween post. Enjoy! Happy listening.
